Leonhard Weiss replaces Hidrostatyba on Rail Baltica stretch in Lithuania
BC, Vilnius, 20.02.2020.Print version
German-owned Estonian company Leonhard Weiss has replaced Hidrostatyba, a Lithuanian company that filed for restructuring in late 2019, as the for the construction of the 55-million-euro Kaunas-Palemonas segment of the European-gauge railway Rail Baltica, reported LETA/BNS.
Hidrostatyba formally remains in the contract, but Leonhard Weiss, a member of the consortium, now becomes the main partner, according to Karolis Sankovski, the CEO of Lietuvos Gelezinkeliu Infrastruktura (Lithuanian Railways Infrastructure).
"From now on, the German company Leonhard Weiss becomes the main partner of the consortium and takes over control and implementation of the remaining work until the end of the contract," he said in a press release.
According to Sankovski, the main 54.762-mln-euro contract, signed with the consortium of Hidrostatyba, Autokausta and Leonhard Weiss in 2018, remains unchanged. The partners' obligations are set out in an annex to the contract. It was planned to complete the project by the end of 2021.
The state railway group Lietuvos Gelezinkeliai (Lithuanian Railways) says over 50% of the work has been done on the stretch between the central Kaunas Railway Station and Palemonas, an industrial area of Lithuania's second-biggest city.
The 870-kilometer Rail Baltica railway connecting Helsinki to Warsaw via Tallinn, Parnu, Riga, Panevezys, Kaunas and Vilnius is expected to be built by 2026.
