Kuldiga must submit its bid by June 5, 2021, with the winner to be announced in the summer of 2022.

A task-force will be set-up to put together Kuldiga's European Capital of Culture artistic program and marketing plan, as well as a number of other preparatory work. By becoming the European Capital of Culture, Kuldiga will not only gain an influx of visitors and high-level cultural events, but also a number of intangible benefits - recognition, as well as media and international interest.

As reported, Liepaja has also put its name in the running to become European Capital of Culture in 2027.

In 2027, the title of European Capital of Culture will be awarded to one Latvian city and one Portuguese city. This is the second opportunity for Latvia to receive the title of European Capital of Culture. In 2014, the title was awarded to two European cities - the capital of Latvia, Riga and Umea in Sweden.
