Last week, from 17th to 20th of March, a virtual hackathon HackForce took place with the aim of discovering solutions to the challenges arising from the Corona virus crisis. One of the winners was the #paliecmājās movement– a volunteer network offering deliveries of food and other goods free of charge to those who are in at-risk groups or under home quarantine. Anyone can receive help from #paliecmājās – either by calling 25661991 or by visiting their website at www.paliec-majas.lv.

Thousands of citizens have been in self-isolation or quarantine since the state of emergency was announced in Latvia. Self-isolation is especially important for elderly people, and those with chronic illnesses, for whom even going grocery shopping can be dangerous. Also, those who have returned from overseas and are required by law to spend 14 days in self-isolation might find themselves in a critical situation, especially if they lack essential support from friends or relatives.

In order to help these people and protect other citizens from possible infection with Covid-19, #paliecmājās has a volunteer network offering delivery of a variety of goods – food, medicine and other essential supplies -, dog walking and offering emotional support. #paliecmājās especially encourages those who do not use digital technologies and are in Covid-19 high risk groups to ask for help by calling: 25661991. We are also inviting neighbours, care-givers and social workers to encourage people in need to call and ask for help.

In order to provide as much help as possible, #paliecmājās is calling for volunteers willing to help with delivery of food and other goods, as well as other types of help to apply through their website www.paliec-majas.lv. Everyone, no matter where they are located, who does not have Covid-19, hasn’t been in contact with a Covid-19 patient and has not returned from abroad in the past 14 days can apply to become a volunteer.

The website is available in Latvian and is currently being developed in other languages, however calls are already accepted in Latvian, Russian and English.
