Latvia bans Soviet and Nazi German uniforms at public events

Saeima today passed in the final reading legislation banning use of former Soviet and Nazi German uniforms, insignia and symbols at public meetings, processions and pickets, reported LETA.

The new legislation prohibits use of Soviet and Nazi German military and law enforcement uniforms (including stylized versions), their elements and insignia.
The ban also applies to Nazi or Soviet flags, coats of arms, anthems, swastika, SS insignia and Soviet symbols – the sickle and hammer and the five-pointed star.
Violations of the ban on Nazi and Soviet uniforms and symbols will be punishable with an official warning or fines of up to EUR 350 for individuals and up to EUR 2,900 for legal entities.
Under the existing law, participants of meetings, processions and pickets are prohibited from using flags, coats of arms, anthems and symbols (including stylized versions) of the former Soviet Union and Nazi Germany.
